Computer Controlled Engraving

My name is Nigel Pobgee and please forgive the short ‘curriculum vitae’ but it helps explain my fairly unique in-depth knowledge of this industry.

My experience with Computerised Engraving machines dates back to 1984 with Engraving Supplies (Surrey) Ltd. During my 8 years there I assembled & repaired Dahlgren (ES) 24x13 tables, TRS-80 computers, repaired Wizzard 1, 2, XL and Auxiliary table machines.

Another of my functions was the commissioning of specialised machines (multi-engraving heads, specialised jigs and vacuum tables etc) Even back then we put 2 axis computerised control systems on Alexander and Taylor Hobson K & D pantograph floor standing bases.

I was also responsible for the Sevice Contracts and for one week most months I also taught clients how to programme their new systems, dealing with all levels of customer ability from managing directors to machine operators.

After a short spell at Gravograph with the VXM, VX & IS range of machines I left to start Cipher Systems Ltd with two well known partners in the industry.

As Technical Director at Cipher I was responsible for hardware & software, repairs and manufacture of controllers. I also selected the Multicam Routers from Texas to add to our range of engraving machines providing up to 2m x 3m cutting areas for sign makers and special applications.

Another important function at Cipher was to engineer our controllers on to other engraving machines such as Dahlgren, Gravograph, Newing Hall, Cielle….in fact almost anything with stepper or servo drives.

This enabled machines left behind by progress or with dead controllers to be brought to life again and use modern software such as Casmate, SignLab/EngraveLab, Type 3, Artcam etc for 2, 2 ½ and 3D engraving, routing and carving.

After a spell distributing Vision Engraving Machines I have concentrated more on other business interests.

However  I can still offer un-biased advice and repairs or upgrading of all makes of machines or indeed the purchase of a new or second-hand engraving machine.
